Crosses and Milagros

Devotional Art

Catholic Christianity was instilled in the native Aztec populations by the Spanish conquistadors in the 1500s. It remains the predominant religion in Mexico. Our handmade devotional and religious art is from three cities in central Mexico -- San Miguel de Allede, Puebla and Oaxaca. Our tin nichos feature images of the Lady of Guadalupe, and saints. Crosses range from sculptured wood bearing milgros to folksy tin crosses decorated with bottle-cap images.

Read More About Crosses and Milagros

Viva Oaxaca’s handmade wall crosses are fashioned of wood and tin. These Christian devotional figures range from simple, hand-tooled, tin crosses to larger, creatively designed wood crosses. The wooden crosses are often adorned with metal milagros. These are religious charms, usually figures of body parts, that focus attention on a particular health concern needing spiritual help. The artists who make the crosses for us are based in Oaxaca and in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
